The Seattle Park Pontoons transform the 520 Floating Bridge from a single component of infrastructure into adaptable extensions of the Seattle public park system.
The Park Pontoon scheme distributes the floating bridge pontoons throughout the metropolitan area, promoting the widest range of use and expanding Seattle’s parks with minimal impact. The Park Pontoons visibly integrate resource reuse with waterfront development, furthering the city of Seattle’s mission to “promote environmental quality, economic vitality, and social benefit through the design.”
The pontoons may be permanently fixed, or exchanged between different locations in the city as needs change or grow within specific communities. Each pontoon is designed to provide facilities for either cultural, gathering, sporting, or gardening activities, which support the requirements and desires of the adjacent neighborhoods where they are located.
The Seattle Park Pontoons create an advantageous connection between fixed land and the city’s diverse waterways, offering greater opportunities for the general public to engage with and enjoy the water’s edge.
